Focus on animal welfare: politics meets practice at HEIDEMARK

Anna Aeikens visits our turkey farms

Member of the German Bundestag Anna Aeikens recently visited several of our animal farms in Saxony-Anhalt. She was accompanied by Managing Director Bernd Wiegmann, veterinarian Dr. Eva-Maria Gefeller, Production Manager Martina Herms, and Christoph Lang, Head of Corporate Development.

The focus of the visit was on discussing the current challenges involved in the transition to housing system 3. Ms. Aeikens—a member of the Bundestag's Agriculture Committee and deputy member of its Construction Committee—was receptive to the concerns of our industry and promised to advocate for practical solutions in Berlin, particularly with regard to the often contradictory legislation surrounding animal husbandry and building law.

On site in Trüstedt and Hüselitz, our colleagues informed the MP about the planned changes and the difficulties involved, particularly with regard to the approval of attached conservatories. These are of great importance for species-appropriate husbandry and the economic implementation of husbandry form 3.

Dr. Eva-Maria Gefeller, Martina Herms, and the entire team on site made an important contribution to highlighting the practical reality on our farms. Bernd Wiegmann emphasized: “We want to convert our stables in a future-oriented way—but without the right building regulations, this is hardly feasible.” Christoph Lang also made it clear: “For HEIDEMARK, housing type 3 is the next logical step in the further development of our animal husbandry.”

We would like to thank everyone involved for the lively exchange and are pleased that the challenges facing our industry are now also being given greater attention in politics.
